The 9th IDF World Championships in Modern Dance Sport have been heralded as the greatest ever. This spectacular show of dance took place in the gorgeous setting of Castiglioncello, Tuscany, Italy, in the warm spring sun from the 24th-31st May. This location was the perfect setting for such a beautiful Championship with the stunning coastline, iconic local castle and modern dance appealing to the global audience.

The event began with an explosion of colour, joy and passion through an IDF parade inspired by the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. The flags of the 28 participating nations were paraded through the streets of Castiglioncello by the athletes, officials and local figureheads who greatly contributed towards making this event such a success. The parade brought the whole town together with hundreds of local residents admiring the start of an unforgettable week. At the head of this Opening Parade the Female Adjudicators proudly carried the IDF flag.

If this wasn’t enough the Opening Ceremony itself was mind blowing. The Rosignano Solvay Stadium was a scene of energy and exuberance as an array of famous performers got the Championships off to an unbelievable start. Amongst these performances were the world renowned dancers of the Chinese Disabled Dance Company who were a part of the Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony, the special guest and patron of the event Simona Atzori, the local groups and the inspirational and charismatic Los Locos.

Over 2000 dancers took part in the Championships, the most since it began back in 2003, with 3 different stages holding the 5 days of exciting competition. It was also the debut Championships for the dancers from China, Israel and Ireland who joined the IDF at the end of 2010 highlighting the growth of the federation across the globe. The standard of competition was extraordinarily high with the local Tuscan community able to witness the event through live broadcasts on the Tuscan Television Granducato and RadioDanza as well as interviews from competitors and IDF Officials shown on the Italian National TV Channel Rai3. The whole competition was also widely publicised by the local press, mostly La Nazione. Congratulations to all the dancers for their great effort and exceptional level of performances with a special mention of the Ukrainian team that placed themselves at the top of the medals standings with Italy and Hungary finishing second and third respectively.

The Disabled Dance Festival lived up to the quality of the Dance Sport which preceded it. The competitors showed unbelievable talent and courage with the audience moved to tears at times. This brought to light the values which the IDF aims to promote, of an organisation of inclusion with safe and accessible opportunities.

These championships were a tremendous success due to the passionate performances, exciting themes and a mixture of cultures blending together in a beautiful setting. Thanks has to go to all the National Federations and competitors for the efforts that were put into the Championships as well as the Italian Dance Federation Danza in Federazione, Sabor de Cuba Club and the Community of Castiglioncello and Rosignano. The event had tremendous support from Alessando Franchi, the Mayor of Rosignano Marittimo, together with the local council. His thoughts prior to the championships became a reality as the event promoted the local area to the global audience and the competition brought the friendship and solidarity he was looking for.

We now start our preparations for the 10th World Dance Sport Championship being held in Eastbourne, England, in May 2012 and we are sure with your help we can build on the great success of 2011.
